NPR: "How animals foretold the earthquake"
npr:
We know how humans first sensed Tuesday’s earthquake. We felt the shake, then the rattle, and then the urge to flee.
But what about the region’s animals?
Did they sense the rare 5.8-magnitude temblor before the shaking started?
We checked in with the folks at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, one of the most popular attractions in the nation’s capital, to see what they could tell us.
Their answer: Many animals reacted to the quake before humans knew it was coming.
Our favorite part of the Smithsonian’s National Zoo’s press release: “According to keepers, the giant pandas did not appear to respond to the earthquake.”
The Panda knows, and does not care.
At my lab at NIH (where I was in the basement running an experiment during the quake) we have 20 minutes of dvd fooage pre- and postquake of mice in a social approach task. We checked out the footage from the DVDs once we were allowed back in the building. The mice did not seem to even flinch, which is hysterical because I personally flipped a shit. You could see the whole apparatus shaking and the mouse was like, das coooool I’m gonna check out this empty corner. No big.

The easy-going pandas “did not appear to respond to the earthquake,” zoo officials said. Haha. Pandas.
